Description
Up for sale, a 1960s Welson DS2 vintage hollowbody electric guitar in exceptional condition and in perfect working order. Founded in 1921 by Orlando Quagliardi, the Welson company began producing quality electric guitars in 1962 alongside more popular brands like Eko and Vox. One of the rarer (and as far as we can tell completely undocumented) models produced in Italy by Welson, this early iteration of the DS2 model features a 335-style body and pair of stock humbuckers that have the chime and midrange of a mini-humbucker, yet also percussive and round qualities analogous to a Wide Range humbucker. The bridge pickup in particular has a great dry snap and twang, and the clear and balanced acoustic properties of the instrument really do come through when the guitar is plugged in. Featherweight at 5lbs 10oz, this Welson is a ton of fun to play and has been professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar with low action and 10-46 strings.

The maple neck has a rather chunky C shaped profile, with generous shoulders and a consistent fretboard width all the way up the board, further emphasizing the hefty nature of the neck and feeling like a more substantial Rickenbacker-esque profile. There's some light flame figuring in the maple and the smooth gloss finish on the neck is very smooth on the palm. The fretboard features block pearloid inlays and multi-ply binding for a clean, upscale look. The original slender fretwire is in remarkable shape, with well rounded crowns and no notable wear. The guitar plays cleanly up the neck with no buzzing or dead spots and the scale length is 23 1/2", with a rather slinky feel partially due to the extended string length behind the bridge. The nut measures 1 5/8" in width and on the headstock, the original chrome tuning machines turn very smoothly and hold pitch as they should. Even the small "Made in Italy" sticker is intact, and this fragile oft-removed sticker is another testament to the incredible condition of this vintage Welson.

All of the electronics work as they should, with a three-way blade switch pickup selector and individual Volume and Tone knobs for each pickup. The stock roller bridge works very smoothly with the vibrato unit, which retains its original arm and has a very responsive spring. Perfect for warbles and modest dives, this vibrato (and the tone of the guitar in general) lends itself to surfy twang and spy movie goodness, and would be a great secret weapon for a Country or Americana session too. The chrome plating on the vibrato and pickup covers is in excellent shape, and each chromed piece of hardware is marked with the miniature embossed "Welson" name. The stock pickguard is present as well, and this instrument is sure to satisfy both discerning collectors and serious players. Aside from some finish checking (extremely common with Italian guitars of this vintage) and a couple finish cracks near the neck plate which are also only cosmetic, there is no other particular wear of note on the guitar, and as the photos show, the original three-tone sunburst finish is still very vibrant and rich.

A vintage hardshell case is included.
