Description

The Weymann & Son instrument company built stringed instruments in Philadelphia, PA in the late 1800s through the early twentieth century. They are especially esteemed for their quality banjos. This mandolin banjo is a Style A Orchestra, and its appointments place it at the lower end of the Weymann quality spectrum, but, like Martin guitars, it's still a well built instrument showing quality craftsmanship.
Earlier versions of the Style A Orchestra banjos were described in the catalogs as having Weymann's unique and patented 'megaphonic tone amplifying rim', but by the time of construction of this piece, the rim is a thick and heavy cast aluminum unit, without a neck stick or neck brace/adjuster. The neck attaches with a single machine bolt.
The head measures 11" across. Scale length is 13 3/4", and the neck measures 1 1/4" at the nut. The back of the resonator is faux-grain painted, sporting a tattoo-worthy decal that, at first glance, looks like real marquetry. The tuner covers are engraved.
All components appear original, including the head and bridge, but the tail piece cover, one hook and possibly an arm rest are missing.
The neck was removed and shimmed for appropriate action, frets were leveled and dressed. A superficial crack on the faceplate was glued.
The mandolin banjo plays easily and produces a nice sound; not bright, rather more mellow than what one might expect from, say, a Gibson mandolin banjo. Comes with its original soft case with broken hinges.
