SN 108 New price. Here is an interesting and elegant guitar by young Maine-based luthier (and Winfield flatpicking champ) Matthew Grant Arcara. He makes a very clean guitar with an eye toward materials and subtle design. Matt generally builds dreadnoughts so this OM is a bit of a departure and a rarity. The top is a select Adirondack spruce and the back and sides are straight grain mahogany. The binding is jet black with a subtle stained wood trim. The rosette is matching with black and inlaid wood. The pyramid bridge is a replica 1929 Martin style, the fingerboard is jet black ebony with no inlays. The headstock veneer is jet black as well, possibly highly polished ebony. The neck measures 1 ¾” at the nut with 2 ¼” string spacing at the bridge. He is a traditional builder but with a nice sense of individuality. I suspect a lot of thought has gone into the voicing. Inside you’ll find a high-X design with two gently scalloped tone bars and small maple bridge plate. I was surprised to find dreadnought style attack and clarity with medium strings and fingerpicking friendly warmth with light strings. It’s a very young guitar that will continue to open up with play. There is a sound port in the upper bout. Overall, a very fine guitar by a luthier on the rise at a very good price.
