SN P200601. Prototype flattop guitar hand built by renowned archtop luthier William E. Moll III. The Moll flattop line consists of three models – an SJ, and OM, and a 000 – but none are exactly like this. It is called an “Auditorium Prototype Model” incorporating the body shape of the SJ but with smaller dimensions. It is 15 ¾” across the lower bout, 12” across the upper, 4 5/8” deep at the tail tapering to 3 ¾ at the neck. Something of a J-185 shape and feel. This prototype is kind of a formal presentation or performance edition incorporating every feature available on the production guitars with the exception of a cutaway. Every detail is meticulously executed. And there are lots of them. The top is a select Sitka, the back and sides an ultra-flamey, very choice Koa. The top and back are bound in maple trim, the top purfling and rosette are a brilliant green abalone, and the bridge is stylized ebony with two-piece saddle. The three-piece neck of mahogany and maple has a volute like a vintage Washburn. The ebony fingerboard is bound in maple and trimmed in abalone. The neck profile is carved to a D shape with a 1 11/16” nut and 2 1/8” string spacing at the bridge. As formal as the guitar appears, it has a very warm and approachable tone with a deep bass and gentle trebles and sustain all day. The neck feels fast and the action is set quite low. It’s fun to play. A great choice for an archtop or electric player who needs a performance-quality flattop. Ships in a bullet-proof flight case.
