SN 119065. Fresh from the work bench of Dennis Berck is this outstanding 1951 Martin D-28. Dennis provided a fresh neck reset, new frets, and exact repro bridge. In '51 Martin was still making guitars by hand in the old North Street factory with super high quality tonewoods. It's one of the finest D-28s I've played. The back and sides are quarter-sawn crack free Brazilian, mostly straight grain but with some figuring in the center cut, inlaid wood center strip. Bound front and back in ivoroid with b/w trim and rosette, and dark faux tortoise guard. The neck has the ebony fretboard with big dots, a 1 11/16” nut, a comfortable and fast modified V neck, and the cool ridgeback tuners that work so well. The top is flat with no weird pulls, one well repaired pickguard crack. It’s a powerful bluegrass guitar – incisive bass with growl, midrange sustain and overtones, biting trebles. I’ve paired it with one of those cool mid-70s baby blue molded plastic cases. $11,000.
