SN 118738. Earlier this year I sold an outstanding 1951 D-28 and I’ve wondered if that was just a freaky good guitar or was ’51 a crazy good year? When I had the chance to buy another, I jumped on it. Sure, it’s a small sample but I’m ready to declare ’51 a crazy good year for the D-28. In '51 Martin was still making guitars by hand in the old North Street factory with super high quality tonewoods. The back and sides are quarter-sawn crack free Brazilian, mostly super straight grain. The neck has the ebony fretboard with big dots, a 1 11/16” nut, a comfortable and fast modified V neck, and the cool ridgeback tuners that work so well. Original bridge and bridge plate both in good shape. The top is flat with no weird pulls, light checking and nicks, one well repaired inside pickguard crack and the faintest outside crack that was glued before it went anywhere. Bound front and back in ivoroid with b/w trim and rosette, and dark faux tortoise guard. It’s a powerful bluegrass guitar – incisive bass with growl, midrange sustain and overtones, biting trebles. Comes with a good quality Canadian hardshell case. $11,000.
