SN 248. This two point A. Lawrence Smart mandola was special ordered by a young Forrest O’Connor while a student at Harvard. After graduation he got a job playing with his family band, who went on to have a #1 charting and Grammy winning bluegrass album. The rest is history. This Lawrence Smart masterpiece is a nontraditional art deco design modeled after two instruments Mr. Smart built for Arthur Stern, the renowned glass artist and mandolin aficionado. Per the customer’s request, the back and sides are crafted from big leaf Washington state maple. The top is Engelmann spruce and the pickguard and headstock are Koa. It is typically full sounding similar to Smart’s more typical F designs. It’s in excellent condition with a little playwear and DNA here and there. There is a hole for a strap button but no button. On the case there is an “H” decal from the owner’s alma mater and the original owners name engraved on the plate. This is a unique opportunity to own a fine instrument customer previously owned by one of the brightest lights in progressive bluegrass today.
