SN X8891. Here is a remarkably clean, great playing and sounding time machine that has been in my private collection for years. Introduced into production 1947, following a single batch in 1942, the J-50 is essentially a J-45 with a natural top. The architecture of 1954 edition is much the same as the banner years and one year before some unfortunate changes began to happen to the J-45 and J-50. The model still retains the small maple bridge plate, the tall “knife blade” back braces and tall thin scalloped tone bars. This is the last year for the small teardrop faux tortoise pickguard and 19 fret fingerboard. It’s a peak year. They have a belly up bridge, “open book” Gibson headstock, three-to-a-side closed back Kluson Deluxe tuners. The mahogany back and sides are stained light and the top is a radiant small grained spruce, probably Sitka. The body is bound front and back with the w/b/w motif echoed in the rosette. The neck with is 1 11/16” at the nut and has an adjustable truss rod of course. Though a player, this one has very few bumps and bruises, some light crazing, and a little wear around the sound hole. There are some tiny capo indentations on the back of the neck, too small to see without looking very closely. The pictures tell the story. The guitar plays well with a perfect neck reset and fret job a few years ago. It is warm, open, and balanced with fat mids and trebles. It is super clean inside and out and original right down to the bridge pins. It retains its original case – the brown exterior with brown felt interior, also in excellent condition.
