Imperial Guitar & Soundworks
Description

Offered for sale:

Used c1977 WEM COPICAT Mk IV ECHO UNIT produced for Guild distribution in the U.S.

This tape effects unit is in very good condition, fully functional and cosmetically showing expected wear from playing time. Also, it has just been recapped.

Regarded as the most famous Tape-Echo Unit in Britain, and quite possibly the World, the Copicat is the first repeat-echo machine manufactured as one compact unit. Designed by Charlie Watkins in 1958, upon hearing a similar sound effect generated by two linked studio quality tape recorders.

The introduction of the tape-echo sound revolutionised pop music during the late 1950's and early 1960's, being behind the guitar sound of many of the top British bands. These little machines sold by the thousand!!

Charlie Watkins gives his assessment of Valve versus Solid state Copicats:

"Despite popular belief that the preceding Mk.1 and 2 Valve Copicats were the best performers, the facts are that this first departure from valves, was by far the more successful. This was mainly because of its early transistor state of the art design with its greater stability and greater recording bias control. It also had, by this time, developed far superior tape transport components. This model was sold by the 100's of 1000's all around the world. Most of them are still running nowadays. Incredibly reliable, with its superior dynamic range (of great importance when used for voice) and vastly improved erasing circuitry its only offset was the prevailing nostalgia and love of valve circuitry. But as an Echo Unit it outshone everything else the world had to offer. Although new digital technologies have made it possible for the unique and original Copicat sounds to be emulated and actually improved upon - nothing will ever be taken from the original pioneering Copicat - which climbed the mountain first!"

Imperial Guitar says:

Great piece of early guitar effects evolution, real tape units like this have an organic sound that just sounds “right”.

“We test every used effects unit and pedal when we buy it and bring it up to our standards before we offer it for sale. Then we burn it in for an hour or so before we ship so that there are no surprises.”

*Please note: we do our best giving descriptions of used pieces. We have found it impossible to describe every mark on an instrument or amp that is not in the "mint" category. Also, what's important to you may not be important to someone else. For example, you may say, "I don't care what it looks like as long as it plays or sounds well." Another person may say, "Body cosmetics are very important to me so tell me about every scratch, nick and blemish." So, please ask the questions that are most important to you. If you ask they will be answered. They are free and there's no limit. Additional photos can also be made available.

This is a specific item that is also being offered for sale in our brick & mortar location. It is possible that it has just been sold. Please ask if it is still available before purchasing.

*It is our policy to require a signature on delivery of all musical instruments. Please let us know if you prefer no signature required when ordering or we will automatically require a signature.

If you prefer your item to be sent without a required signature Imperial Guitar and the selected carrier can no longer be responsible for the security of the package once it has been delivered.
