SN 95705: The Martin style 5-18 is the smallest guitar in Martin catalogs; at the lower bout, it measures 11.25″, while at the upper bout it is 8.25″. And its body is just 16″ in length, with a scale of 21.4″. In 1930s catalogs, the style 5-18 and the less expensive matching size 5-17 were listed with the caption “Junior, or three-quarter, sizes fine for children; easy to hold and to play.” They were made in small numbers until Marty Robbins popularized in the in 1950’s and 60’s and later by Dolly Pardon. Today they have a place as folk instruments (in terz and standard tuning), as travel guitars, and as junior instruments. This little guy has an Adi top, mahogany back and sides, original finish, frets, and tuners. Possibly a neck reset somewhere along the way as the action is dead solid perfect. At some point, likely the 70’s, the top was patched and the guard was replaced. The neck is fulsome, it plays perfectly and stays in tune, and sounds like a “grown up” guitar albeit a little boxy. Comes with a new perfect fitting Martin Geib style likely made for their Marty Robbins reissue. On consignment.
