SALE PENDING. SN 119224. Wow. Best of breed 50s D-28 with a rifle shot attack, huge sound and rich nuanced tone. Everything you could want in the bluegrass cannon. It’s in wonderful condition with minimal dings and checking and an elegant Lifton case that is likely original to the guitar. In 1951 Martin was still making great guitars by hand in the old North Street building but this one stands out. The quarter-sawn and book-matched Brazilian Rosewood back and sides have some subtle figuring with a w/b/w binding a decorative center seam. The Sitka top has a narrow grain at the edges widening toward the center seam triple bound in w/b/w motif that is echoed in the rosette. There’s a little finish wear on the east side of the sound hole and a small spot on the top with some strap burn just south of the bridge otherwise super clean. There’s a small case bite and the beginnings of a pickguard crack that was attended to before it went far. The ebony bridge looks original but very slightly lowered. The belly is correct and it’s one of Martin’s thicker bridges to no concerns there. String spacing is 2-1/8” and nut that is just shy of 1-11/16th. Large MOP dots serve as position markers. Tuners are nickel closed ridgebacks that continue to work very well. The back of the headstock is stamped “Made in the USA” indicating it was originally made for export. There’s a little scuffing on the top of the headstock. The neck is a very fast and comfortable modified V with volute and strap button properly installed on the heel. The action is set up for bluegrass with just under 8/64” on the bass side and between 5-6/64” on the treble. The case is faux alligator with a deep Cabernet (or Syrah) plush interior. An outstanding guitar in every way.
