FON T7818-29: Friends, here is a 1959 J-50 round shouldered dreadnought that is remarkably well preserved and resplendent in its original Cali Girl pink lined case. It has a gorgeous, super clean Sitka top and lightly worn, honey colored mahogany back and sides. It has the large but thin pickguard, Brazilian Rosewood bridge with drop-in saddle. The trim and rosette are a nicely aged w/b/w pattern. The body is bound front and back. Mahogany neck has large dot position markers and painted black headstock with the boxy Gibson decal. Tuners are the time-honored three-to-a-plate Kluson Deluxe with the lube hole. Adjustable truss rod with original cover. Inside there are two tone bars with a gentle taper toward the end. Everything looks very clean inside and out. This guitar is living proof that flat top guitar building was alive and well in Kalamazoo through the end of the 50s.

It’s has some maintenance on my watch – neck reset, fret leveling and polish, new bone saddle and a complete setup. There is one Gibsonesque factory miscue that has been corrected. The bridge plate was positioned in the wrong place and when the pin holes were drilled the back of the plate was chipped off. I’ve seen this numerous times as early as 1934 and now as late as 1959 (same dude?). Fortunately, the Gibson bridge plates are not tucked under the X-brace like Martin. And, while originality is something to be strived for, a correctly functioning bridge plate is critical to the architectural integrity of the top. So, my luthier made a bridge plate of the same material, dimension and thickness and put it where it should be.

All work by the meticulous Mark Tossman. The action is dead solid perfect. This is on consignment from a local gentleman whose family is the second owner. It has many songs under its belt and many more to come. Original hardshell case in good shape.
