SN: 685. Here is a magnificent 2016 collaboration between master builders Wayne Henderson and Jayne Henderson working out of Wayne’s studio in Rugby, VA. Wayne, of course, is the master luthier, rural route postal working, world class musician who has toured internationally, played at Carnegie Hall, and been honored by the White House. He is, to me, a national treasure. Jayne is environmental-lawyer-turned-luthier inspired by the same heart and soul of indigenous American music as her Dad. Jane says “As one of the most creative aspects of instrument building, inlay is one of the areas in which I thrive” and her artistry is especially evident on this guitar. I’ve seen a number of Wayne’s guitars but none with the level of fit and finish as this one. The back and sides are exceptional, figured Koa wood. The two-piece, perfectly book matched Koa is divided by a colorful arrowhead strip. The top is a Smoky Mountain Adi finished in sunburst and trimmed 42-style in abalone; some of the most colorful I’ve seen. A faux-tortoise guard and classic Martin-style belly bridge (but with classic Henderson pin placement and scalloped edge) complete the top. The neck has a modified V profile with volute, slotted headstock, and gold Waverlys. The inlaid position markers are a unique design and the Koa headstock is adorned with a flowering inlay. Every edge of the guitar is bound in ivoroid. The nut is 1 ¾”, the string spacing at the bridge 2 3/8”, the scale length is 25 ¼”. The tone? Close your eyes and you might think it was a dreadnought. Great bottom end, mid-range attack, treble clarity. And, it’s young and still developing. Great in open tunings. Powerful in drop-D. Comes with a new, good quality Guardian case.
