Description

Offered here is an original L-series 1964 Stratocaster built in the final model year before the infamous takeover by CBS. Many consider these 1964 guitars to be particularly special because they represent both the peak and the end of Fender's initial production and development run. This is a particularly nice example in superb original condition.

The neck on this incredible Strat is dated October, 1964. It has a bit of flame to it and depth measurements of .816" at the first fret increasing to .966" at the twelfth fret. The original frets remain in very good condition. It has a beautiful figured Brazilian Rosewood fretboard and original nut and clay inlays rather than the transition era pearloid dots adopted in the following model year. The Alder body and finish are also all original, with no modifications to the body routes and the bridge has the pre-CBS "Fender Pat. Pend." stampings The original mint green guard precedes the switch to white. The electronics and solder joints appear all original as well. The original three-way switch is installed, as well as the grey bottom pickups dating to November '64 and the CTS pot codes dating to a May '64 batch. The headstock sports the pre-CBS "spaghetti" logo and the metal spacer for the string tree. The guitar has a total weight of just 7.4 pounds.

This guitar is much more than it's great history, however, as it has great tone and is a great player too. Please check out the brief 'Soundcloud' sample below. Even with just three pickup positions, this thing sounds heavenly.

The condition is exemplary for that of a 60 year old instrument. A bit of buckle rash and some light paint loss on the edges are the only flaws to be found and you will really have to look to find them. It also appears that a previous owner lightly sanded the neck to reduce the tackiness. The frets remain quite playable, with an estimated 40 % of their playable life remaining. You won't find many '64 Strats in better condition than this lovely example."

This marvelous old Strat comes in its original "no-logo" G&G case along with the "ashtray" bridge cover, trem arm and trem cavity cover (not installed on some of our photos).

Make this investment-grade iconic Strat yours. A playable piece of music history.
