Description

Wow! This is my first McPherson guitar and man, I'm blown away! These guys have completely re-engineered the acoustic guitar with amazing results. While McPherson has made a host of improvements to the traditional guitar design, the most significant (and obvious) changes are the offset sound hole and the cantilevered neck joint. Both of these changes significantly improve the sound board's ability to vibrate. For my first example, I chose an MG 3.5 with Engelmann Spruce top, Striped Macassar Ebony for the back and sides and figured Koa for the binding and trim. This is a gorgeous guitar and one that is incredibly well built. All McPersons are large body guitars, but this model has a relatively shallow body depth which makes it very comfortable to play. The sound is still huge, but you don't feel like you are playing a guitar with a 16" wide lower bout as the body depth tapers down from 4" at the upper bout to 3.5" at the lower bout where your forearm lays. These guitars are heavier than your traditional acoustic - this one weighs just under 6 pounds - because of the internal neck mounting hardware, but this is a very well balanced and rock solid feeling instrument and the trade-off in improved resonance is well worth a little more weight. The sound is big and the tone incredibly well balanced and articulate. It is a responsive guitar too, one that you can easily play fingerstyle as well as with a flat pick. The neck is a very soft V and quite sleek. The guitar comes with three bone saddles of varying heights so you can easily modify the setup yourself. Factory installed electronics include a superb LR Baggs system with volume control. This amazing guitar is currently setup with the medium height saddle and with Elixir Nano Lights. It plays and sounds divine! The condition of this 2008 is what I would call "excellent minus." It shows some light fret wear primarily under the b string in the cowboy chord area. Upon very, very close inspection you will also find a few very tiny impressions in the top and some "button scratches" in the clearcoat on the back of the guitar (see photos), but nothing serious. It comes in a top-of-the-line Ameritage humidifier case, with a sound hole cover, three drop-in bone saddles and all the original paperwork. Replacing this amazing guitar new would cost you about $9k. Get this beauty for substantially less. This is truly an impressive design and I'm sure this will not be my last McPherson guitar!
