A very rare instrument, and the first I have ever owned. Little fret wear, nice action, straight neck (with working truss rod) plays great and sounds like an Ampeg Devil bass!
Issues- the body has had a really pro refin. It's dead on, and when I first saw it the refin went right by me. The neck is original. The previous owner told me he sent it to some guy in New York, it was very expensive, but it was very well done, a wonderful and accurate job. A P Bass style pickup had been added, which I suppose was not uncommon- I have had 2 scroll basses that had a similar modification. The P Bass pickup had a very nice trim ring installed around the pickup, and the guard cutting itself was very well done, like a cadcam kind of thing. I sent the trim ring to Pickguardian, and had a single ply mate made to cover the pickup holes and make them less obtrusive. In addition, I want to say at one point extra holes had been drilled in the guard for extra volume and tone controls, like a set for the original pickup, and a set for the P Bass pickups. At some point the original pickup was unhooked, and there were only 2 pots, for the P Bass. A very well made trim piece was made to cover the 2 extra holes. The original pickup worked fine, and we hooked it back up, using some 1961 1 meg pots, and a .1 cap to help tame that upper midrange honk (the cap was original to the '61 pots). At quick glance it looks stock, but the 2 trim plates are there. The pickup trim plate is included, should someone wish to add a P Bass pickup back to the mix. A new 3 ply guard can be custom cut off the old one for around 100.00, but I chose to leave the original pick guard on it.
I never had the bridge cover. What's REALLY cool is there is a site with a lot of info on these Ampeg basses. The author states that the oldest serial number (stamped on the backside of the tailpiece) that he has seen is 531. Of course I had to know, and was amazed to see that this bass has serial number 531! Things change, but this bass has the oldest serial number of any Devil bass, going by what I have found online, and that is pretty cool.
All in all this is a great looking and playing bass. The pickup has it's own sound, which I personally like but doesn't sound like a Fender, or a Ric! It's doubtful you'd share the stage with another band that has one. I appreciate y'all reading all this, and the interest!
Original hard case with a couple replaced latches is included.
