1890s August Pollman Royal Mandolin Banjo

This is what happens when you don't keep your mandolins and banjos separated...the Pollman Royal model mandolin banjo is an interesting side bar in the history of both that has its own charming appeal and unique tone. Basically it is a banjo neck attached to a flat top mandolin body. This example has solid Brazilian rosewood back and sides and a spruce top, mahogany neck and ebony fret board and bridge. Cosmetically clean and structurally solid the instrument needs nothing. There are a couple of old repaired hairline cracks to the back that are visible in the photos and also a pair of well-repaired top crack (tight, level, stable). The frets show some wear in the first position but nothing that negatively impacts playability or intonation. There is one small piece of pearl missing from the 5th fret inlay. The back was loose down around the lower bout and appears to have been reglued at some point in the past, there is a small amount of 'overhang' of the back in that area, see final pic...not significant but wanted to point it out. The neck is straight, action comfortable. All original including finish, tuners, tailpiece. When played the instrument produces tone not unlike that of a mountain dulcimer, chimey and pleasant. Imagine the tone of a mountain dulcimer but produced by claw hammer banjo technique and you'll have the idea. You can find videos on YouTube of other examples being played for a taste of what to expect. Comes with a modern hard shell case. $1500 + shipping.
