SN 35052: Ultra-rare Bacon & Day Senorita 000-sized Orchestra model from the mid-1930s. Bacon & Day was a popular banjo maker who moved into guitars when banjo sales started to sag. Their guitars were made by Regal and Tonk Brothers yet bear the signature appointments of their banjos. This one has a lot in common with many Washburns I’ve played, although they were clearly trying to capture some of the Martin magic. It is X-braced with two tapered tone bars. The scale is 24.5”. The top is spruce finished in a dark sunburst, multi-pay binding, rectangular Washburn-type bridge, and unique tortoise guard with a point. The rosewood back and sides are finished dark. It’s likely not Brazilian but “the other rosewood” as my luthier calls it. The nut is 1 ¾” wide and the neck is a modified V very similar to the Martin necks of the period. The rosewood neck is bound and marked with snowflakes, notched diamonds, and a dot or two. The headstock is MOTC and very tastefully done. The guitar is in good shape with a few nicks and scratches, checking, and pickwear. While they did not achieve the Martin tone, they did achieve something between Martin and Washburn that combines the richness and articulation of the former with the boxy qualities of the later that will compliment many playing and singing styles. Comes with a good fitting Martin case.
