SN: 65056. 1935 was a great year for all things Martin and this little beauty is no exception. This small bodied “student model” made of all mahogany has, over time, blossomed into a powerhouse with eighty years of seasoning. The condition is superb. I’ve had two or three other guitars that appear to have been bruised in their infancy and put under the bed out of harm’s way. This looks to be one of them. There’s a bump on the back edge of the upper bout probably done by the original “student”. While the side of the guitar has other light scratches and a few dings, the rest of the guitar is nearly immaculate. The 0-17 model is made of all mahogany with no binding, a simple rosette, rosewood bridge and fingerboard with small MOP position markers and simple plated individual tuners. The nut width is 1-3/4” and the neck is the highly desirable modified V that has that great vintage feel. String spacing at the bridge is just less than 2-3/8” making it a fingerpicker’s delight. There’s a fresh neck reset and refret by master luthier Mark Tossman. The setup is completely dialed in to the original specs with a very comfortable playing action. Tone-wise, the guitar punches well above its weight with a rich bottom end, terrific projection and dynamic range. It is currently in a new plastic molded case that is 00-sized (slightly large) but I’ll look for something more appropriate.
