1939 Martin 000-28
Description
71961 – Friends, here is an uncirculated prewar 000-28 in stunning condition brought back to original playing specs by Dennis Berck of Eugene, OR. It is a veritable time capsule – perhaps the cleanest prewar guitar I’ve offered – and one of only 48 made that year. Beautiful book matched Brazilian Rosewood back with some figuring, zigzag center strip, and ivoroid binding. Straight grained Brazilian sides joined at the butt end by white ivoroid and original end pin. Adirondack spruce top with a fine grain trimmed with herringbone inlay and bound in white ivoroid. Multi-ply rosette, faux-tortoise pick guard and plain ebony belly down bridge with original white pins with black dots. The neck is mahogany with ivoroid heel cap, long snowflake pattern on ebony fretboard, rosewood faceplate with decal logo and original Grover tuning machines. The nut is 1 ¾”. Inside the guitar there is the rear-shifted scalloped X-bracing no Popsicle brace and original bridge plate. Mr. Berck provided a dead solid perfect refret and neck reset and everything is dialed back to the original specs. The guitar plays as if new. It’s a magical fingerpicker with an enchanting voice and a robust flatpicker that responds to a light touch and does not break up with a heavy one. There is very light crazing throughout the top and a little on the back and some finish missing from the back of the neck but not noticed when played. It generally has the fresh look of a well-kept and lightly played one family instrument. Ships in a very cool Canadian-vintage Calton case. On consignment.
