SN: 95486. Friends, here is a postwar 000-28 I purchased from a rock star luthier who kept it as an example of an original, unmolested Martin gently influenced by the effects of aging. It’s a beautiful instrument. Straight grained Brazilian Rosewood with fine Sitka spruce top. Herringbone trim and ivoroid binding on the rims top and bottom. Ebony belly bridge and fretboard with big round position markers. Ebony neck reinforcement. Swirly faux tortoise pickguard with slightly reddish tint. Original fleur-di-lis tuners in good working order and carved volute on the back of the neck.

It was well cared for. Appears to have had a neck reset and refret with new saddle and nut and likely a refret and PLEK. The work is super clean and almost undetectable. Bridge is original though the string holes have been notched. Height of the saddle approximately equals the depth of the slot but the action is quite low. It plays very smoothly without buzzing up and down the neck. The setup is spot on.

It’s quite clean but no closet queen. There’s light playwear on the top around the pickguard, 2-3 scratches on the top and a couple on the back. The top is graced with a lovely light checking identical to that of the near-mint ’39 000-28 I had last summer. The insides are very clean and original. There’s a small amount of finish missing from the back of the neck in the first position, less than the size of a dime. Not a crack anywhere. A superb example overall.

I’ve enjoyed being able to compare to compare this Sitka-topped, taper-braced example with the earlier Adi/scalloped rigs. By comparison, the voice is somewhat brighter than the scalloped, and more intimate. But it’s full of character and punch and not thin by any means. The neck is a slightly narrower version of the prewar modified V. The action is low and it’s a joy to play. Ships in a new Geib-style hardshell case.
