Hailing from Lexington, Kentucky, Chad Underwood has been quietly cementing his reputation as the "Bolt on Builder" of choice to the likes of David Grissom, Paul Reed Smith (Yes, that Paul Reed Smith who currently owns several of Chads guitars) Texas blues legend Anson Funderburgh, Lee Roy Parnell, as well as several other extremely talented high profile players.

This particular model, the Chad Underwood Hardtail Mongrel Stratocaster is another stellar example of his work. Aptly named the Mongrel, this hardtail Stratocaster isn't just a blocked tremolo, rather it is accomplished via a vintage style Fender Telecaster Ashtray bridge w/3 brass saddles.

Bringing her to life is a pair of Lollar Blonde Stratocaster pickups up front and featured in the "T" style bridge is a Lollar Special Telecaster pickup. This particular guitar is one of Chads earlier builds when he could still make and sell guitars with the Fender label on the headstock. The old growth Brazilian Rosewood fretboard is a work of art by itself. Equipped with the familiar 5-way pickup selector switch we all love, this masterpiece just has to be heard, familiar in all the right places yet with a tone that can only be described as well... well, it sounds like a cross between a Stratocaster and a Telecast. (okay, we all saw that coming...lol) Pure bell like notes ring out with ease, crisp bass notes that pop through the mix, and seemingly endless sustain to boot!

What sets Chad apart from the rest of the pack is his tireless attention to the most minute details, coupled with a deep knowledge of and a passion for the classic '50s to mid '60s Fullerton masterpieces right down to the rounded fretboard edges and Chads patented Nitrocellulose Lacquer based finishing process lovingly and faithfully recreates the feel and visual appeal of a 60 to 70 year old guitar that's been lovingly cared for. The weather checking on this guitar is difficult to capture but displays just right in person.
