Description

Few builders demand perfection from their guitars like Bill Collings. He builds a full line of ultra-high quality stringed instruments, both electric and acoustic and every instrument that leaves the Collings facility is the absolutely best they can make it. Having said that, some Collings guitars are even better than others, and this fabulous 002H built in 2005 is one very special instrument.

This incredible 00 is a 24-7/8" scale instrument with 12 frets free of the body. It was built with the finest tone woods available. It has an upgraded Adirondack Spruce top, which in itself is a $1K Collings option. The back and sides are made from AAA grade Brazilian Rosewood of a quality, beauty and tone that builders can only dream about getting their hands on today, regardless of price. Back in 2005, I expect this was a $3K upgrade; today it is unavailable. It has a Honduran Mahogany neck with Collings' very comfortable Modified V neck shape with depth measurements of .830" at the first fret and .930" at the ninth fret. It has Black Ebony fretboard with 14"-16" compound radius, medium nickel-silver frets, 2-5/16" string spacing, a 1-13/16" bone nut and Abalone fretboard inlays. It has an Ebony belly bridge with a bone drop-in saddle. The slotted headstock has a veneer of Brazilian Rosewood with Collings' upgraded torch-style inlay. The tuners are 16:1 ratio Waverly open-backs. The stock Ebony bridge pins have been upgraded to much nicer bone pins with Pau dots.

This guitar sounds incredible! Listen to the provided sound sample and I think you will agree, this guitar sounds like heaven, even with my limited playing abilities. It has a voice that is clear, balanced and succint. It plays quite responsively too, so you can dig in and make a statement or play with a light touch and get an intimate feel to it's sound. Flat pick or fingers, it plays with ease and is currently set up with 9th fret string heights of 5/64" on the low E side and 4/64" on the high side with lots of saddle remaining.

This magnificent guitar has been played of course, but it's condition indicates it has been treated with the care and respect that an instrument of this high caliber deserves. You will really have to look to find the flaws. Even under my high intensity photo lighting I can find only very light evidence of play and handling and only from very, very close up. It has no significant cosmetic or structural flaws and the frets remain in very good condition as well. It comes in it's original Collings/TKL case, also in very good condition.

If you could buy a new example of this guitar with these upgrades (you cannot), it would easily cost in excess of $10K. Get this fabulous and well preserved example for thousands $ less. A great price on a magnificent Collings 00!
