This is a 2002 Fender Custom shop Masterbuilt Mike Eldred Stratocaster based off of Jimi Hendrix’s legendary Olympic white 1968 Fender Stratocaster used at Woodstock. It is one of four exact replicas and the only one that was made available for resale. All three others were reserved for museums and the Hendrix family.
On a Monday morning (August 18th1969) Jimi Hendrix took the stage as the final performance of Woodstock. It has been said that this was Hendrix’s doorway into history and the iconic Olympic white Fender Stratocaster he used was his key.
In the early 2000’s Fender received the original instrument for study from the Hendrix family. The guitar was painstakingly disassembled, documented and measured for the purpose of recreating four identical replicas under the stewardship of Fender master builders Mike Eldred and George Blanda. This was the only time the original instrument had been taken apart since it was built and (according to Fender and the Hendrix family) it would be the last.
Of the four clones made, one went to the Hendrix family, one to the Experience museum for display, one stayed at Fender and the only remaining guitar was made available for sale. This particular one ended up being purchased by John Mayer for approximately $70,000. The original 1968 Woodstock Stratocaster sold (according to CNN) in 1993 for $1,300,000 USD.
This is an incredibly rare one-of-four made Fender Jimi Hendrix 1968 Woodstock Stratocasters and is in factory original condition with all provenance and Fender certificate. Even an original 60’s strap. There are truly no others available like this as again, only one was made available to the public.
