Summary: In order to combat the popularity of the Gibson Les Paul in the increasingly “heavy” rock scene of the early seventies, Fender decided to drop its single-coil-only policy and develop its own mean, twin-humbucker machine: the Telecaster Deluxe. Employing none other than Seth Lover, the man who had designed the original humbucker for Gibson, they launched the “wide-range” humbucker. This pickup has since gained a following for its unique tone. Here is an opportunity to own the real thing, an all-original, beautiful-playing 1976 Tele Deluxe.

Body: Two piece ash. Belly-cut contoured back. Natural finish.

Neck: Chunkier neck shape (more a D than a C). One piece maple with walnut “skunk” stripe. 3 bolt neck plate with “micro-neck-adjust” truss rod access. 21 Medium Jumbo frets. Large headstock. Bullet-style truss rod. 25.5” scale. 1 5/8” nut. 9.5” radius.

Pickups/Hardware: Two Seth Lover designed wide-range humbuckers. Six in-line tuners. String-through Stratocaster-style hard tail bridge with individual saddles and chrome bridge cover. Three-way pickup selector switch. black Fender amp-style knobs with chrome tops. Three-ply black-white-black pickguard. Chromed hardware.

Cosmetics: There are some finish chips and dings along the edges of the body. There is superficial buckle rash on the back. There is is marking, possibly from a strap, on the finish by the bottom strap button. The top finish has light crazing. The neck has a few dings, scratches and worn spots, most notably a finish scratch on the fretboard at the sixth fret. The frets themselves are in good shape, with some wear but plenty of meat left. This is a player’s guitar, but one that definitely has not been abused.

Playability: Fretting is even up the neck, and single note runs are smooth. The larger-sized neck on this example is very comfortable. The two humbuckers do indeed cover a “wide range” of tones with a clear, punchy voice.

Weight: 8 lbs, 15 oz.

Case: Original hard shell case.
