Description

Offered is Gibson Custom Dickey Betts SG VOS #B2B010, one of just 250 VOS format guitars made to honor this artist, the Alman Brothers Band and this great guitar. Like the original, this SG has a one-piece mahogany body with mahogany set neck neck and a total weight of just 6.6 pounds. The neck is a 60's SG shape, with depth measurements of .830" at the 1st fret and .900" at the 12th fret and feels relatively wide and substantial in your hand. The rosewood fretboard has a 12" radius, big "banjo" size frets and a 1.6875" wide nylon nut as Dickey's did. The Tune-o-Matic ABR-1 bridge has nylon saddles like the original as well. The pickups on Dickey's guitar were key to it's special sound, so this recreation has been given a special set of Gibson Custom Buckers with Alnico III magnets which have been produced to original PAF specifications, but with slightly irregular coils just like the original. As with Dickey's guitar the stock tuners have been switched out to enclosed nickel tuners for better on-stage tuning stability. With this model, Gibson did everything that could be done to replicate Dickey's iconic SG.

My first humbucker guitar was a late 60's SG, one that I played through my college years, so this is a model that I appeals to me on a very personal level. I have also bought and sold lots of Gibson Historic SG reissues over the years which were fabulous electrics. Let me say, however, that this B2B model feels, looks and plays much more like the SG that I owned 45 years ago than any of the Custom Shop reissues I have owned since. The metal, plastic and finished wood surfaces have been given a bit more aging than your typical VOS instrument and the brownish-red finish color result in a guitar with a much more authentic vintage look and feel. The sound is vintage SG as well and the playability is fabulous. This guitar also stays in tune like few other SG's I've played! Gibson made just 250 of these VOS format SG's back in 2012 and another 75 were aged further and hand-signed by Dickey Betts himself. The VOS models had a street price of $4,250 and the hand-signed versions went for somewhere in the vicinity of $7K. Given these very low production numbers, these guitars are likely to be excellent investments. This VOS example is in superb condition and the VOS aging aside, is in near mint condition. It comes with it's original B2B case and certificate of authenticity. A playable example of guitar history. Make it yours.....
