This is a cool project guitar for the right person who appreciates how rare these early Gibson flat tops are. I bought this to restore, but I’m not going to get to it. This is a restoration project that is going to need serious work above and beyond the usual work these 90-year-old instruments all need. Read the add carefully and look at all the pictures. This is sold “As is” “no returns”, and it is fully described with lots of pictures, and an accurate read on the work needed.

FON # 9755 places it as 1930 in Spann’s Guide. This is the 11th L-0 listed for 1930 in Spanns guide. Previous to this model, the L-0 had a rounded “peanut shaped” body, making this is one of the first run of full size body L-0’s. Includes original set of Waverly Tuners, some pics show guitar with tuners off.

It appears this may have had an original suspended pickguard, judging by the mounting screw holes on the top at the 16th fret, and the screw hole on the treble waist. Same basic dimensions as an L-00, but with mahogany top instead of spruce. Original finish is in nice shape. These 1930 L-0’s had a nice rounded neck profile, not a V neck like some later models, and this one has a great neck profile. 1 23/32 at the nut. Replaced bridge. The top, back and sides are in solid condition with one thin stress crack between the bridge and the sound-hole on the treble side, and one similar crack on the back by the bass side waist. The neck is in great shape.

The fretboard has been scalloped, and the frets filed. The fretboard will need replacement. A prior owner put Elmer’s glue on the inside bracing..the potential winner of a “Darwin Award”..? The good news is that this cleans up as easily as you can clean up glue on all the braces, which is difficult, but at least it’s the right type of glue for removal. Removing the back to me seems to be the only reasonable way to get this cleaned up to me, but I’m no expert. I did some minimal clean-up of the glue up on the back cross-brace beneath the sound hole to show that it can be done, with a before and after shot as the last pictures in the add. One support brace was added at the treble side of the sound hole which I have removed and has some other type of glue reside. As bad as the pictures of the bracing look, there is a great guitar here for the right person. The two big issues are the new fretboard, and the glue removal, plus the work any 80-year-old L-00 is going to need, including a new bridge.
