Description

For a decade or so now, Gil Yaron has been building some of the most accurate replicas of classic Fender and Gibson designs, including some of the most coveted 50's era Les Paul copies available. I've had a couple and they are among the finest LP replicas you can buy, regardless of price. More recently, Gil sought to build his own design that captured the essence of the much copied LP, while also improving on this classic design to make it all his own. The result of this effort is the Gil Yaron Bone.

The Bone has a shape all it's own but the size and scale of the Bone is quite close to that of an LP and it fits perfectly in a Les Paul case. Starting with a solid Mahogany body Gil then removes the Mahogany core and replaces it with another solid, but much lighter wood. A flamed Eastern Maple top is then added. The result is a very resonant, but much lighter, solid body instrument. This instrument weighs just 6.0 pounds on my scale. No Les Paul I have ever played can touch the acoustic resonance of this Bone, however.

As with a Les Paul, the Bone utilizes a Gibson scale Mahogany neck with similar fret wire and nut width. Gil calls the neck a "soft V" but to me it feels like it came right off of a '59 Les Paul Reissue, with depth measurements of .900" at the 1st fret and .990" at the 12th. This example comes with an a gorgeous dark Brazilian Rosewood fretboard and binding, both of which are Bone upgrades.

The Bone is equipped with Gil's own "Air-Gap" humbucking pickups which combine a PAF-style coil and the coil from a Broadcaster in each pickup. Adjustable poles in each coil allow Gil to dial-in a tone which is certainly reminiscent of a vintage PAF, but with more depth and clarity. Along with the standard 50's LP circuit and CTS pots, this guitar has been upgraded with an NOS wiring harness and NOS Paper-in-Oil Bumble Bee caps.

This Bone plays effortlessly and the tone is fabulous; the woody bite of an LP mixed with Tele twang, but with chime and complexity mixed in. You feel and hear the LP genetics, but the many small improvements Gil has made are evident. Don't take my word for it, however, David Hunter reviewed the Bone and gave it Guitar Player's - Editors' Pick Award. See the link below to see Pete Thorn demo and discuss this amazing model.

This 2014 example is in excellent plus condition. Upon very close inspection under strong, indirect lighting you will find some very fine play and handling scuffs on the back and on the pickguard, but otherwise, this guitar is close to spotless. The frets show no observable wear. It comes in it's original SKB LP case with TSA locks. Play a Bone once and all you will be able to say is, "wow". The Bone is Gil Yaron's work at it's best.....
