Harmony H165 1967 | $525 | (v2427) Harmony H165 1967 | $525 | (v2427) Harmony had a long and interesting history from its inception until the later sixties, when this guitar was made. But the venerable Chicago company was beginning to feel the economic pressure of the Japanese competition; the handwriting was on the wall. But he guitars from this era were still American made from solid woods, and have a following today in the vintage market.
The top, back and sides are choice 'ribbon' mahogany, typical on many Harmonys of the era. The only adornment is a simple b/w ring at the sound hole. The neck is poplar and carved in a modern 'C'-shape. The rosewood fingerboard is radiused and sports pearl position dots. The head stock is painted black with the Harmony logo in gold script. The bridge is rosewood and in typical Harmony fashion, it features a 'string-through' arrangement in lieu of bridge pins, and two bolts on the wings to secure the bridge.
The body measures 15 3/8" across at the lower bout .. 000-size ... and scale length is 25 1/4". The neck measures 1 3/4" across at the nut with string spacing set at 2 1/4" at the saddle. Action is set at 7/64".
It appears that a prior owner had reglued the pickguard, as there is some glue smear around the perimeter of the guard. We recently: reset the neck; worked some glue under the rear of the bridge; leveled and dressed the frets; lubed the tuners.
The guitar is crack free, all original, with some finish checking, and various nicks and dings from age and use. It plays quite well, and produces a big and full sound with the dry, woody tone one would expect from an all-mahogany, large-bodied flat top.
No case.
