Description

Some pretty incredible guitars pass through our shop, so it takes a particularly amazing instrument to generate any real excitement. Offered here is a guitar that quickly had me frothing at the mouth, a Bluesmaster Custom 59 by Johan Gustavsson of Sweden.

Most guitarists who have played one of Johan's guitars would not dispute that he is making some of the finest electric guitars currently available. Each of his works is in itself a masterpiece which he has somehow bestowed with a tone, look and feel that is reminiscent of a well preserved 50's vintage classic. Along with a very desirable vintage vibe, however, you also get modern specs, a build quality that is beyond reproach and playability that few real vintage electrics can match.

The Bluesmaster 59 is of course Johan's version of the venerable '59 LP and is among the best interpretations of this classic electric that you can find anywhere, at any price. The specs of this very special Bluesmaster include: a solid premium grade Spanish Cedar body with a highly figured Eastern Maple top, Tea Burst nitrocellulose finish and a total guitar weight of just 7.8 pounds; a 24.75" string scale Mahogany neck with extended tenon, a '59 C shape and depth measurements of .91" at the 1st fret and .99" at the 12th; a gorgeous Brazilian Rosewood fretboard with 12" radius and 1.685" bone nut; a Gustavsson adjustable wraparound bridge piece; and for electronics, Throbak SLE humbuckers with LP style controls and wiring.

The feel of this guitar is decidedly LP-like, but few LP's you will ever play sound or play as well as this instrument and nobody carves a 50's neck like Johan. To describe the tone of this guitar, just think of the sweetest sounding LP you ever heard. That is what you get with a Gustavsson Bluesmaster. The sound of this example is a bit sweeter to my ear than others I've played, perhaps it is the Spanish Cedar. The very light weight of this particular example makes a great guitar even more special because it is so much more comfortable to play. The setup and playability are superb. This is a guitar that makes you feel like you are a better player than you really are!

This guitar was built in 2015 and has seen little play. Some very faint swirl marks on the back are the only evidence of play or wear beyond the very light aging Johan applied at his shop to give it the look and feel of a vintage piece. The frets show no observable wear. It comes with it's similarly clean G&G custom case and paperwork, including the CITES certificate for the Brazilian fretboard.

New examples of this instrument can be ordered for future delivery at a cost of $11.5K as long as you are very patient. Word has it Johan is moving his shop and building has slowed during the transition. This lightly played and very special 2015 example can be yours today for the same price and you can have it much sooner. This is one of the finest electric guitars available anywhere at any price. Just incredible....
