Description

If you love Martin guitars as we do, this very special instrument should be of significant interest to you. Offered is Martin 000-18 Marquis 1937 built in 2005. This guitar is said to be one of three prototypes that were built as pre-cursors to the Martin models that would become the 000-18 Golden Era 1937 and later, the 000-18 Golden Era Authentic 1937, both of which have since been discontinued. Besides being an extremely unique and collectible instrument, this guitar remains in near mint condition making it even more desirable.

The 000-18 Marquis 1937 is a 14-fret, short scale (24.9") instrument with an Adirondack Spruce top with back and sides made of Mahogany. It has Golden Era style scalloped X bracing made of 1/4" Adirondack Spruce. The hardwood neck has a Modified V shape with a first fret depth of .865" and a 30's style heel. It has a Black Ebony fingerboard with a 16" radius, a 1-3/4" bone nut and old style abalone dot inlays. It has a 30's style Black Ebony belly bridge with a bone saddle, 2-5/16" spacing, and Ebony bridge pins. It has vintage style nickel open geared tuners. It is simply detailed with an 18-style rosette, black/white top trim and tortoise binding, but the back strip, purfling and headstock overlay are made from Brazilian Rosewood, details which never made it into the production models which followed. It is finished in gloss with a touch of aging toner on the top. The case is a 533 Geib style.

If it were not for its incredible condition, this marvelous instrument could easily be mistaken for a vintage guitar and has a vibe which screams "pre-war Martin." It has a voice that is classic Martin too; warm and woody. Please check out the brief sound sample included. It plays superbly and is set up with 12th fret string heights of 6/64" on the low E side and 4/64" on the high E side. The neck angle is perfect and the truss rod adjusts smoothly. When received this guitar had the original Martin strings installed, but a new set of light gauge Elixir Phosphor Bronze light have been installed. I love how it sounds and plays!

It is obvious that this guitar has spent much of its life in storage. It shows no flaws of any significance and the frets remain in fantastic condition. It comes in its original Martin Geib style case, also in great condition.

Just a lovely and rare Martin acoustic and one that is in amazing condition. This is one I should probably hold onto. Buy it before I come to my senses!
