Description

With all the amazing guitars we stock here at Capital Guitars Online, it's not surprising that I am sometimes tempted to divert a guitar intended for our inventory to my personal use. In the case of this incredible Martin Custom 000-42 Koa, the temptation is overwhelming!

The build specs for this guitar include the best elements Martin has to offer. This is a 000-sized instrument with 12 frets clear of the body. It has a short, 24.9" string scale, a 1-3/4" bone nut and 2-1/4" string spacing. The top, back, sides and headstock overlay are made from highly figured Koa. It features full hide glue construction and Golden Era-style 1/4" scalloped top bracing. It has a 45-style rosette and 42-style top inlays made of select Abalone pearl and is completely bound in white grained ivoroid. The tropical Mahogany neck has Martin's Modified V neck shape with a 30's style heel. The fretboard is black Ebony with intricate Abalone snowflake inlays. It has an Ebony belly bridge with a compensated bone saddle. It has a slotted headstock with Golden Era-style Abalone inlays and fancy side-mounted Waverly brass tuners with ivoroid buttons. And unlike the 000-28K Authentic 1921 model that some may be tempted to compare this guitar to, this guitar has a fully adjustable truss rod.

This guitar plays and sounds as good (or better) than it looks. It is perfectly setup with 9th fret string heights of 6/64" on the low E side and 4/64" on the high side. The soft V neck feels fabulous. It is equally happy being played with fingers or flat pick and is nicely responsive - it can be intimate or loud depending on your attack.

The tone is nicely balanced across the spectrum, with particular strength in the mid-ranges. I am a big fan of Koa guitars not only because of their physical beauty, but also because of the nice balance Koa provides between tonal warmth and clarity. This guitar has a balanced voice that makes it a great all-around guitar.

While built in 2014 this guitar is in flawless condition. Incredibly, I think I was among the very first to play this amazing piece, as I cannot find a mark on it. The frets are flawless and the original Martin strings were still installed until I changed them out. It comes in it's similarly mint Martin Custom case with the guitar shroud and paperwork.

Back in 2014 this guitar had a suggested retail price of over $12K and a street price of $10K and today these prices would be even higher. Get this virtually unplayed beauty for thousands less.

This is an amazing piece. If you have been looking to treat yourself or a significant other with a seriously special instrument, you need look no further. This marvelous Martin has it all!
