Description

Converted to steel string in 2002 at Kovacik Guitars, this '64 Martin 000-28C started life as a nylon string guitar. The back and sides are super straight grained, perfectly quarter sawn Brazilian rosewood with beautiful brick-red color that is virtually impossible to find in a modern build. The original top was replaced with an exceptionally fine grade of Sitka spruce (purchased from Martin) and braced with pre-war style scalloped bracing. The top is bordered in herringbone and sports a beveled and polished tortoise pattern pick guard. The original neck was replaced with a Martin factory-made neck that was purchased at the Guitarmaker's Connection back in the late 90s...the neck has a slight 'V' shape and a full profile with a 1 7/8" nut width (the way 12 fret necks were made up through the 70s), an adjustable truss rod and Waverly individual tuners. The lacquer finish on the guitar was shot by Dale Bartholomew, who worked for Martin in their finishing shop for decades. The guitar has been used for the last 20 years as a studio instrument by one of my clients who is a professional player, he has cared for the instrument very carefully and it looks as good as the day I sold it to him. With the exception of a few very light pick marks on the pick guard there isn't a mark on the guitar anywhere. An LR Baggs I-Beam pickup was installed years ago and remains in the guitar, works fine. The action is set with the low E at 7/64 at the 12th fret and the high E at 5/64", that with plenty of saddle showing to lower the action if desired. The neck is set with minimal relief (basically flat), currently the set up facilitates flat picking or finger picking but for a dedicated finger style set up the action could be lowered (plenty of saddle to allow for that). Intonation is good all over the neck. The tone of the guitar is superb whether finger picked or flat picked, versatile and articulate. Sound file available soon on request. 5-ply hard case included. Note that the shipping rate is set to get the guitar from the east coast (where I am) to the west coast. If your shipping turns out to be less I will refund the difference once our deal is done. Better yet, contact me before you buy with your address for a shipping quote to your destination so you don't overpay.
