SN: L-748. Here is an incredible, one-of-a-kind, custom order from Master Builder Roy McAlister. The inspiration is simple. In the 1940s Gibson made a small version of the J-45 – the LG-2 – and to a certain extent, a small version of the J-35 in the 1930s -- the L-00. What if Gibson made a small version of the legendary AJ? Here it is. Roy chose a figured BRW for the back and sides and bound them in a three ply ivoroid binding. The top is a select Adi with very tight grain at the center seam gradually wider in the bouts. Fretboard and headstock are bound in ivoroid. The rectangular bridge and fingerboard are BRW with the AJ’s arrowhead motif inlaid in frets 3, 5, 7, 9, 12, 15 and 17. The headstock has the inlaid McAlister logo and a vertical arrowhead. Tuners are Waverly G-98 repros with Ivoroid buttons. Every detail is carefully considered down the capped heel, tasteful center strip, fire stripe guard and inlaid white bridge pins. Though very appealing to a collector it will be much enjoyed as a player. The D-shaped neck has a comfortable vintage feel with its 1 ¾” nut the 2 3/8” spacing at the bridge. Scale length is 24 ¾. The 14 ¾” body feels comfortable in the lap. By no means a cannon, she already shows plenty of volume and nuance and responds well as a fingerpicker or a flatpicker. Roy top tunes his guitars to bring up the bass. It’s set up with low action, plays cleanly up the neck and has a lot of headroom when played aggressively. Ships with a good quality Crossrock fiberglass case.
