Some of you may have seen the fabulous, custom-built Moonstone solidbody electric guitar we had here a few months ago; this guitar almost makes it pale by comparison. It was made by noted luthier Steve Helgeson, in 2007, for the same person for whom the electric had been made in 1982, who called himself Johnny Redwood (from whose estate we got the guitar), and the initials “J” and “R” are inlaid in mother-of-pearl into the truss rod covers of its respective necks. It may or may not be the only one like it the builder ever made but regardless, you’re not likely to encounter another, for sale or otherwise, anywhere. The instrument is, in a word, large, in every conceivable way (20”wide at the lower bout x 22-1/4” body length x 4-3/4” deep). The Moonstone name is a highly respected one; Helgeson's guitars are meticulously hand-built and made from the rarest of highly-figured woods. The entire body of this one is of flamed, bookmatched myrtle; the rosette is hand-made from burled hardwoods; the fingerboards are of course ebony, beautifully inlaid with abalone shell moons and stars; the tuners are gold-plated mini-Grovers with ebony buttons. And now for the tones it produces: LARGE, like everything else about this most exceptional, gorgeous, unique guitar; clear and BIG. The action is excellent on the 6-string neck; there’s a bit of extra relief on the 12-string neck and we’d suggest leaving it as is. There is an endpin jack for internal pickups, non-functional. I do not know how much the original owner paid for this guitar but I cannot imagine any ultra-professional builder, in modern times, charging anything less than $10,000 for an instrument of this caliber, probably more. The current owners are motivated for it to sell and so would like for it to find a new, appreciative home at an extremely reasonable price. Included is a road case to fit, complete with casters. Shipping anywhere in the continental US will be included. $3995 w/road case.
