Description

Offered here is a guitar that is easily the most talked-about new issue of the 2018 model year. This is a brand-spanking-new 2018 PRS Silver Sky developed by PRS in close consultation with artist John Mayer. However you may feel about John Mayer or about PRS producing what is obviously a take off on an iconic Fender guitar, the Silver Sky is a great Strat-style instrument. It should be, considering how long this model took to develop, how particular John Mayer is known to be about the details of the instruments he plays and of course, how good PRS is at producing very high quality guitars.

Most, but not all of the specs of the Silver Sky are relatively predictable. It has a solid Alder body and a Maple neck. The neck shape is a medium C-shape, with depth measurements on this one of .85" at the first fret and .96" at the twelfth fret. It has a 1-21/32" bone nut and the frets are 6105 or similar in size. It has a lovely dark Rosewood fretboard with small "Bird" inlays. The fretboard radius is a bit controversial in that John chose a vintage 7.25" radius for his namesake guitar. This really shouldn't come as much of a surprise as he often plays real vintage Strats with this neck radius and it certainly doesn't restrict his ability to bend the strings. It has a PRS shaped headstock and light weight vintage style locking tuners. It has a classic steel tremolo bridge with drop-in arm. The truss rod is a double action style unit. While the electronics and control layouts are of a traditional design, the single coil pickups were painstakingly designed for this guitar. This example is beautifully finished in Frost Metallic and weighs just 7 pounds, 2 ounces.

If you've played as many Strats and Strat-style guitars as I have, it takes a pretty special guitar to impress me and this guitar does. You can tell a great deal of engineering resources and fine tuning went into the development of this instrument as soon as you pick it up. It feels and plays like a guitar costing far more than the relatively modest price that this guitar commands. I like the combination of Strat-style and PRS cosmetic touches. This is one classy S-stype. It sounds special too. Please check out the brief sound sample provided. This guitar sounds like a Strat, but it has a voice that is more complex and rich than most other Strat-style guitars in this price range. The voice of this guitar gives testament to just how fussy John Mayer is about tone.

This 2018 Silver Sky is in mint and unplayed condition and has only been out of the case for photos and brief testing by me. It comes in it's original PRS gig bag with the trem arm, tools and paperwork.

PRS gets $2,199 for new examples of this guitar, but this as new example can be had for a bit less. If you have wanted to try this great new model, or you have just been looking for a great Strat-style guitar, then make this lovely PRS Silver Sky yours today. Very nice indeed!
