Description

Offered for your consideration is this fabulous PRS Angelus Cutaway designed by Steve Fischer and built in 2010 in PRS' Maryland factory. I've had a few of Steve's guitars, a couple of his own branded instruments and another PRS Angelus and I am a huge fan. When Paul wanted to add a line of high-end acoustics, he brought in Steve Fischer to oversee the process and to make an acoustic that was worthy of the PRS brand. Play a Steve Fischer instrument and it is easy to see why Paul did, they are guitars that are beautiful to look at, exquisitely built and with a superb tone. While Steve did not stay at PRS for very long (I've read his family could not adapt to east coast living), The designs developed during Steve's tenure are still being built as Private Stock models at PRS to this day.

The Angelus is a Grand Concert sized instrument with a 15-1/2" lower bout and a 25-1/4" string scale. This one has an optional Venetian cutaway. The top on this one is made of lightly figured("bear claw") European Spruce and the back and sides are made of lightly figured Mahogany. Steve Fischer developed a unique bracing system for this guitar and it is factory-equipped with PRS' own proprietary Piezo pickup and preamp system. The 14-fret neck is Mahogany and is braced with carbon fiber. The fretboard is Cocobolo Rosewood with "Old School" style abalone bird inlays. It has a 1-3/4" bone nut. The headstock is overlayed with Ebony. The bridge is Ebony with a bone saddle with 2-3/16" string spacing. Upgraded bone pins are installed, but the original Ebony pins are included in the case. The tuners are PRS' own open back design with Ebony buttons.

This is a very lightly braced instrument and it is powerful, yet balanced across the frequency spectrum and quite clear-voiced. It is very responsive to your level of attack, so it is easily shifted from subtle and nuanced to loud and thundering. The original owner had this guitar setup for fingerstyle play with 12th fret string heights of 4/64" on the low E side and 3/64" on the high E side. Please check out the brief sound sample provided. My poor play does not do this guitar justice; the tone and playablity are superb!

This instrument is in great condition with just a couple of flaws worth mentioning. There is a dent in the headstock near the A tuner (see photo) and a bit of stain bleed on the top of the from the natural oils in the Ebony used for the bridge and the neck binding. Otherwise, this guitar shows only the lightest evidence of play. It comes in it's original Ameritage case which is in near mint condition.

To get a new guitar comparable to this one today you would have to buy a PRS Private Stock model or you could commission a guitar directly from Steve Fischer. Either of these options would cost you at least four thousand dollars more than this lovely 2010 model. If you are looking for a fabulous, high-end fingerstyle guitar at a great price, this PRS / Steve Fischer Angelus warrants your careful consideration. Fantastic!
