Description

Offered for your consideration is a Pirate brand L - 00 "All Koa" built by young luthier Andy Armstrong of Bozeman, Montana. An article I read recently about the budding Pirate brand of guitars impressed me enough to get me to invest in a couple of Andy's handmade instruments. After playing his guitars I am incredibly impressed!

This guitar (serial no. 0201220) is an L-00 sized instrument with a 14-3/4" wide lower bout, a 10" upper bout and a total body length of 19-1/2". It has a 13-fret neck, a short (24-3/4") string scale, a 1-3/4" bone nut and 2-5/16" string spacing. Andy used highly figured reclaimed Hawaiian Koa for the top, back, sides, headstock overlay and binding. The neck is Honduran Rosewood and has a .845" C shape. The fingerboard and bridge are also made of Honduran Rosewood. It has nickel Waverly tuners with Snakewood buttons and the saddle, nut, string and end pins are all made of bone. The finish is thin nitrocellulose lacquer. There was no skimping on the quality of the materials used with this instrument!

Andy is said to have trained for a time with luthier Kevin Kopp, among others and his guitars have an "earthy" vibe and are of extremely high quality, typically far better than the traditional designs that they are fashioned after. The sound and playability are superb as well. Please check out the brief sound sample included below. This guitar has a clear, warm, well-balanced voice that you will love. This little beauty is set up with light gauge strings and 12th fret string heights of 5/64" at the low E side and 4/64" on the high E side. Finger or flat picked this is one killer little handmade guitar and a particularly good value at this price point.

This guitar has seen brief test playing only and is essentially new with no flaws of any significance, frets included. Andy ships his precious works in high quality TKL cases. The uninstalled bone end pin and case key are included in the case.

It is obvious that Andy Armstrong has a real passion for building fine acoustic instruments. He builds them by hand and in very small quantities (one per month or thereabouts I'm told). If he can make the economics work, I know he will be successful down the road. Get yourself an early example of this young luthier's work at an incredible price by clicking the 'Buy Now' button. You will be very, very glad you did!
