Summary: William “Grit” Laskin is one of Canada's most prolific luthiers. He is highly regarded for his elaborately skilled inlay work, but his gift for crafting an heirloom quality instrument in tone and playability make his guitars truly beloved by players around the world. This guitar has a beautiful nautical themed inlay featuring Poseidon holding a mermaid and abalone wave fret markers. It has some finish checking throughout the guitar but is otherwise in fantastic shape. Our in house luthier has just set this guitar up with a new set of John Pearse 12 gauge strings and low/medium action great for finger-style, strumming and flat-picking. The tone from this guitar is outstanding! It ships in a high quality Calton case with red plush interior and trident tuning fork.
From Laskins' website- “The guitars I build, whether Steel-string, Flamenco or Classical, are constructed to be professional concert level instruments. When asked to summarize my “sound” I begin by describing it as “clear without being edgy” and as having what some players have described as “a mature, round, musicality”. What they’re describing is a richer, wider band of frequencies delivering a fuller sound while maintaining the essential properties of clarity, balance and power.”

Body: The body has a solid spruce top, black binding with abalone purfling around the edge and fingerboard extension, rosewood back and sides with multi-ply ladder back seam, a lacquer finish with plenty of finish checking and clear pickguard. The body is 20.25” long, 16” wide at the lower bout, 12” wide at the upper bout and 4 3/8” depth.

Neck: The mahogany neck has a slim profile, ivoroid bound ebony fingerboard, 14 frets to the body, bone nut, 25.75” scale length, 1.750” nut width, 2.145” 12th fret width, 0.800” 1st fret thickness and 0.835” 12th fret thickness. The fretboard radius starts out at 16” and gets incrementally flatter as you go up the neck.

Hardware: The tuners are chrome plated Schallers, the nut is bone, bridge is ebony and the saddle is bone.

Cosmetics: This guitar is in fantastic shape, there is plenty of finish checking all over the body and neck but other than that there are nearly zero notable blemishes, cracks or visible repairs. There are a few nearly unnoticeable light scratches on the bottom side. The finish checking although visible and abundant does not affect the structurally integrity of the guitar or negatively affect the tone.

Playability: Our in-house guitar tech has just inspected, setup and restrung this guitar with a new set of 12 gauge John Pearse phosphor bronze strings. The neck is straight and the action has been setup low and comfortable for fingerstyle, flat-picking or strumming. The frets are in great shape with no major grooves or divots from use and it plays beautifully up and down the fingerboard with no dead spots or choking out.
