  • Description: This 1956-57 single cutaway, dual pickup, solid body Gibson Les Paul Special in classic TV yellow is a prime example of an early Gibson guitar with P90s in all its glory. Gibson first introduced the LP Special in 1955. This guitar has been part of our collection for over 30 years. The 7.4 pound LP Special has a slab mahogany body with a one piece mahogany neck. There are 22 frets on the bound rosewood fingerboard and 10 dot inlays. The scale length is 24 3/4" and the nut width is 1 11/16". Les Paul Special is silk screened on the black headstock along with a pearloid Gibson logo. Electronics include two original soapbar P90 pickups with black covers, two individual volume and two tone knobs on the lower right bout, and a three way toggle switch with a surrounding black plastic plate that reads "rhythm treble" on the upper left bout. The volume and tone knobs are non-original gold top hat knobs. All of the electronics appear to be original. Other features include original Kluson Deluxe single line three on a plate tuners with plastic buttons and brass posts, nickel plated parts, five ply beveled edge black pickguard, black truss rod cover, a stud tailpiece/bridge combination with strings looping over the bridge, nickel strap holders, and a side mounted jack plate. The original serial number on the back of the headstock has been gouged out and covered with some type of fiber cloth long ago before we acquired the guitar. The price has been adjusted accordingly. We have dated the instrument based its features. We replaced the buttons on the tuners which had degraded over time. The bridge studs were replaced long ago and while the bridge leans upward our luthier says it is very stable. The post on the D tuning key is slightly bent and the jack plate cover has one broken corner. There are various dings and dents along with wear areas mostly on the back edge of the guitar and the top of the headstock. The only changed parts we could identify are the knobs, bridge studs, and tuner buttons. The frets are in very nice condition as is the fretboard. It has a comfortable gentle V shaped neck. The tone that is clear and direct with a great chimey top end. Our impression is this guitar has little wear for its age. This Gibson Les Paul TV Special plays great. Due to modifications we are classifying it as a players instrument in spite of its many wonderful attributes. Larry Carlton, Jimi Hendrix and Jeff Beck played a variety of Gibson Les Paul Specials. The guitar comes with a new black Gibson Les Paul case.
